Tour of Xalapa’s Historical Center and Museum of Anthropology.
The unique layout of its streets, alleys, buildings, plazas and murals make this an unforgettable experience. All year round you can enjoy its cultural manifestations: local, national and international, in its historical sites, public buildings, museums, theaters, bookstores, educational institutions and libraries. This visit is one you cannot miss.
The Historical Center of Xalapa was declared a Zone of Historical and Artistic Monuments. It contains more than 350 valuable buildings and sites of historical and architectural importance. Even though the oldest part of the city is not recognized officially as a Historical Center by the INAH (National Institute of Archeology and History), the streets around the Cathedral have been declared a Zone of Monuments. Among these, there stand out: the Government Palace, Municipal Hall, Benito Juárez Park, Plaza Lerdo, the Cathedral of Xalapa, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, the Church of the Calvary, Xallitic Bridge and Neighborhood, Diamond Alley, Jesús te Ampare Alley, Plazuela del Carbón (el Arbol), and the Alley of the Skull.
If you are strolling around this area you can visit the charming Centro Cultural de los Lagos, the City Gallery of Contemporary Art, or the Auditorium of Xalapa Highscool, where musicians and dancers offer high quality performances at very low prices for locals and tourists. If you are looking for something contemporary and a novelty, go to Xalapa’s Interactive Museum which has 3,600 sq. meters of interactive exhibitions, a giant screen and a planetarium.
Without a doubt, Xalapa’s pride is the Museum of Anthropology, also known as MAX. It is the second largest museum of its type in Mexico , second only to the great National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. It opened in 1986, and is affiliated to the Veracruzana University. It presents exhibitions of the three most important cultures of the State: Olmec, Totonaca and Huasteca. It is divided into six halls and three open spaces exhibiting one of the most important Mesoamerican collections, which include 27,000 objects. Enjoy its beautiful gardens and take a breath of fresh air.
